An all-consuming passion
Tristan and Isolde are enemies. Tristan, nephew of the Cornish King Marke, killed the Irish princess’ betrothed. Now Tristan must take Isolde to Cornwall to marry Marke against her will. Beneath the surface of their relationship lies an attraction of fearsome power. When they unwittingly drink a love potion, a torrent of passion is unleashed.
A passion so strong that it will soon destroy not just themselves but those around them. Tristan and Isolde is the operatic equivalent of a tidal wave. It is one of the most powerful experiences the art form has to offer. Wagner’s music is of such potency that audiences will find it hard to resist. Yannis Kokkos’ production clearly communicates the themes at the heart of the opera. Following his triumphant interpretation of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger, Lothar Koenigs will conduct Tristan and Isolde for the first time. American tenor Jay Hunter Morris and Danish soprano Ann Petersen make their UK debuts in the title roles.
